Both men's and women's AFLBS teams started conference play with a win.
This past weekend began the start of conference play for both the men's and women's basketball teams. On Saturday and Sunday, they played double headers against the Red River Rebels from Winnipeg, Canada.
The women's team gave their fans a surprise. After going last season with 0 wins, they came out ready to play and secured 2 wins against the much smaller Rebels. Led by outstanding play throughout the weekend from Grace Dryburgh and Kalei Kerby, the team took the first game 51-39 followed by a 68-56 overtime victory on Sunday!
In the men's games, the team started the first game with intensity but found themselves down by 20 points at the half do to the Rebels outstanding shooting (60% from the field, 56% from the 3 point line). The Conquerors attempted a comeback in the second half, but the deficit was too great and they went on to lose 71-97.
The Conquerors came back much stronger and much better prepared for the second game. With an improved approach and court discipline, the Conquerors established the tempo from the opening tip and played much better defense, resulting in a 60-53 victory at home. The men's team is now 1-1 in conference play.
